Sequence of the Month

Michael with a gnarly kickflip 50-50 grind

How to be the Biggest Assh#le on a Board

by Vince
  • Even though you are fat, wear super tight jeans and try to emulate your punk rock idols, Good Charlotte.
  • Try teaching the beginners tricks that you cant even nail. Like FS flips, only the landing is on one foot and roll around smiling like a dork.
  • Buy really nice stuff, like shoes and boards. But don't skate your new shoes, just use another super worn-out pair.
  • Don't let anyone borrow your board, they might scratch the graphics!
  • Rub the ends of your board with sandpaper so that others will think that you do noseslides and tailslides.
  • When you see someone do a trick, tell him that you can also do that, even though you cant 50-50 grind your ass cause you're too f#cking heavy.
  • Set-up a deck and ollie on it then proudly do a manual to show off to the beginners, don't forget to check for scratches of your deck after each trick.
  • For skilled skaters, when you see someone trying to learn a trick, after they fall or bail, do the exact same trick. Then scream to his face "Did you see that! OMG I'm f#ucking awesome!"
  • Have a mohawk but wear a hat, always.
  • Try a trick that others are trying even though you cant nail it and say "I can do that too!"
  • Lastly, irritate others by actin like you're "tight", like touching them and stuff.
After you completed step number 11, you are officially the biggest assh#le on a skateboard. Oh, I forgot, you must dethrone the existing one first.

Skaters of the Past
By Vince

Since this is the first article of what I dub as "Legend Series", I decided to start with a banger. This article will discuss rumors of what the former heroes of skateboarding did here in Panay.

He was the guy that used Nikes for skate shoes when mostly everybody was wearing Vans. He was the guy that made most of the kids want Royal trucks. He was the guy can can make Marlo anxious before his run in the competition. His name is Paul Ian or Paul "Popper".

The first time that I saw this guy really ride is the time when he went for a visit in Aklan. That day was really a magical one. I never really knew what a Nollie was, until he came here. All the time I thought it was just a fakie salad grind, but I was wrong. He did the gnarliest Nollie over-crooked grind I've ever seen, and I haven't seen that kind of trick being done here in a smooth and drama free manner , even until now. I also saw him doing really sick late 180's over 3 decks and he also ollied 4 decks with ease like it was just nothing, no drama. Just a pure solid snap from his board and then he just glides...

The next time that I saw him ride was in a skateboarding competition in Amigo. During the warm-up session, he didn't land anything. Which made some of the dudes watching "WTF is he doing on class A?". But when he had his run, he was flawless. BS kickflip 5050 on the high side of the funbox? No biggie... Noseslide on the transition? He did one from the other side, no ramps, no nothing... And, the signature nollie over-crooked grind? Of course...

And after the competition, we street skated with him. He did this really nasty noselide on a really high ledge. An he was really nice to us too, he offered us to crash in his house in Alta Tierra.

After several months, he just went off the radar. There was occasional sightings in the mall and stuff, but I never saw him ride again. Some say he went out of the country, some say he is working in a call center, but no matter where he is, people will still remember his name.

Oh, and Ive heard someone confirm a rumor that he kickflipped one of the parking barriers in the old skatepark in Amigo. Go there and check out how high it is... BOOyah

powerslides and one foot "pogo's"

He is probably one of the most prominent skaters in Iloilo. He always cruises around the city with his board or his bike. I really never saw him fall from a skateboard, even until now. Although he does mostly old school tricks, this "old dog" is helping the young ones fall in love with a piece of wood, urethane and metal.

The first time that I saw this guy was on our way to a concert. He was still a blader back then, and he was just rolling on the newly laden asphalt near the concert. I was surprised though to see him rolling with an oldschool rocket type oversized board, oversized trucks and oversized wheels. But more prominently, he is one of two skaters here in Iloilo that rides on mongo.

Things were crazy back then when there was still a skatepark in Amigo, other skaters had beef with the management of the park. Things then started to go haywire and other crews started to sprout. And so, here is Wylie Ross Exito to enlighten us about it...

First things first, how old are you? If you don't mind: 33, 34 on May 31.

Advanced Happy Birthday then. Whats up? I'm tired but I'm still skating for the kids.

How long have you been skating? I started to skate when I was 4 years old, it was 1979.

Whoa. What was your first deck? It was a fiberglass Makha board from the U.S.

Nice cruiser. Someone told me that you're into martial arts. How true is it? I'm into mostly mixed martial arts. But now, I always practice Arnis every morning.

martial arts madness...

Did you quit rollerblading? No, my blades are broken, so I can't skate them.

Skate or skates? Definitely skate.

How fun is downhill skateboarding? Its the ultimate rush. I like speed.

Wylie with a handplant

How do you compare skateboarding today and several years ago? In the past, it was more of for fun, while today, its just a sort of going with the trend. We must rediscover the fun in skateboarding, not skate just to show off and look cool.

To the more controversial question. What happened with the skatepark in Amigo? At first it was OK, but may skaters did not like the management. Most commented on back stabbing issues but it strictly speaking, it was my job. I needed the extra cash that time since I didn't have a job.

OK. Fave trick? 360 manual spin.

Fave skater? Christian Hosoi and Rodney Mullen.

Fave vid? 88 Public Domain by Powell

Have you tried skimboarding? Actually, yes. It was way back on 1992, whenever it rains and sort of floods, I just throw a piece of scrap wood and ride on it. I never really knew what I was doing, but I guess it was skimboarding.

If you were magically to be sponsored, what set-up will you make? It'll be a Sta. Cruz deck, Trucker or Venture trucks, OJ2 or Powell wheels.

his version of the "firecracker"

Likes? Girls that skate cause they're unique.

Dislikes? Hypocrites.

Motto (haha)? Skate till death.

Dream trick? Chist air. Actually, I tried one back in a mini ramp I'm my backyard. I landed on my back and got injured.

some nameless oldschool trick..

Favorite spot in Iloilo? Of course, Museo.

When will you stop riding? Till I break my leg.

If you'll die tomorrow, what will you do? I'll visit my friend in Estancia. She is more like a sister to me.

Last words? Just put the fun back in skateboarding.
